Death of an Insured
Dependents of an insured may continue to benefit from certain insurance coverage following that person’s death.
Death of a worker insured under a basic plan or a supplementary plan
When an insured under the basic plan or a supplementary plan dies, his or her dependents continue to be covered under health insurance and life insurance plans until the end of the insurance period during which the death occurred. Coverage provided is that of the insurance plan that the worker had at the time of death.
For subsequent insurance periods, dependents are covered under the insurance plan that the worker would have obtained with his or her hour reserve file and, if applicable, supplementary contributions accumulated. However, the right to pay an insurance premium ends with the death of the worker.
Death of a retiree covered by the retirees insurance plan
At the death of a retiree insured by the retirees insurance plan, dependents continue to be covered under the health insurance and life insurance plans until the end of the insurance period during which the death occurred. The coverage provided is that of the insurance plan from which the retiree benefited at the time of death.
For the subsequent insurance periods, dependents are covered under the retirees insurance plan as long as the hours recorded in the file of the deceased retiree allow the premium for the retirees insurance plan to be paid. However, the right to pay an insurance premium ends with the death of the retiree.
