Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) program, implemented by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) to support development of apprenticeship programs, came into effect on January 1, 2007. Under the program, apprentices may apply for a taxable cash grant of $1,000 for the first two periods of their apprenticeship. To be eligible, apprentices must:

  • Hold a regular apprentice competency certificate (ACC) in a “Red Seal” trade (the trade of elevator mechanic is excluded)
  • Have obtained a first or second regular renewal of their ACC
  • Have worked 150 hours between the date of issuance of the regular competency certificate and the date of the first renewal or 250 hours between the date of the first renewal and the date of the second renewal
  • Have passed a course in their study program during each above-mentioned year of apprenticeship if the holder of the CCA does not have a diploma in the trade (in compliance with article 7).

HRSDChas increased the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women (AIG-W) to provide better support when women register for training in Red Seal trades, in which women are underrepresented, during their progression to the end of training. The AIG-W is a taxable grant of $3,000 per year/level (or equivalent) up to a maximum of $6,000 per person.

Note : The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women (AIG-W) pilot project will end on March 31, 2023. If you progressed on or after March 31, 2022, your deadline to submit an application is March 31, 2023. Applications will not be accepted after this date. Indeed, requests will not be accepted after this date. You should apply by this date, even if you have not received supporting documents from your apprenticeship authority. For more information.

The Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) will automatically issue a letter of accomplishment by mail to eligible individuals. To receive the grant, apprentices will have to attach to this letter a copy of their competency certificate and the interactive PDF application form (it is also possible to submit the request directly online) or by phoning 1 866 742-3644.
