Training for the “Environmental Qualification: Halocarbons”

Several months before the renewal of their competency certificate, concerned refrigeration mechanics who do not hold an “environmental qualification: halocarbons” will receive a notice from the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ). This notice will inform them how they can register for the training activity offered by the CCQ enabling them to obtain this qualification, in effect since June 1, 2008.

This environmental awareness training course, recognized by the ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques (MELCC), lasts at least 7 hours and addresses:

• The Quebec and federal legislation and regulations concerning halocarbons;
• The environmental issues linked to the emission of halocarbons into the atmosphere;
• Good practices to apply to avoid halocarbon emissions, including the use of appropriate halcocarbon-recovery and -reclamation equipment.

Recognized training for the “Environmental Qualification: Halocarbons”

Some refrigeration mechanics do not have to take an upgrading course to obtain the Environmental Qualification: Halocarbons, since they have already taken training recognized by the ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques (MELCC). They include:

Refrigeration mechanics who hold or have taken:

• A DEP in refrigeration obtained after January 1, 1995;

OR

• The “Récupération de réfrigérants” module in the vocational training program on refrigeration (5075);

OR

• The "Utilisation et récupération de réfrigérants" module in the vocational training program on refrigeration (5315);

OR

• Training in awareness of environmental impacts offered by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) or the Ministère du Travail, de l'Emploi etde la Solidarité sociale (MTESS).

Certificates-Refrigeration mechanics who hold:

• A certificate of training on handling of CFCs/HCFCs/HFCs from theHeating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) obtained after January 1, 1994;

OR

• A certificate of training on recycling of halocarbons from theRefrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES), obtained after January 1, 1994;

OR

• A valid “Ozone depletion prevention card” (ODPD) issued by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment;

OR

• A valid “Atmosphere Protection Environmental Certification” for refrigeration mechanics issued by the Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association (MOPIA).
