Starting Your Own Company
If you have decided to create your own construction company, it is important to take the right steps so that you can work legally on Québec’s construction sites.

Here are the steps to take:

  • Register the company with the Registraire des entreprises du Québec (REQ), if applicable.
  • Obtain a contractor’s licence and pass the related examinations, if applicable. The licence will be issued by one of the following organizations, depending on the case:
    • Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ) for plumbing-heating companies;
    • Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec (CMEQ) for electrical contractors;
    • Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) for all other categories;
  • Register the company with the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ), whether or not you will have employees for your construction work. On the other hand, if you are subcontracting work, this registration is not necessary.

You will find more information to guide you in your start-up process on the Government of Québec’s Services to Businesses portal.

If you wish to evaluate a plan for a new construction company in a given sector, the CCQ also has useful information on economic activity, companies, and the labour force available to future contractors.
