Life and Accidental Mutilation Insurance

Life and Accidental Mutilation Insurance

The insurance plans provide for payment of life insurance benefits if a worker or one of his or her dependents dies. As the insured individual, you can designate the beneficiary for your lifne insurance to the CCQ by filling out the form Beneficiary Designation and Revocation (Life insurance only)

The CCQ's Customer Services must be notified of the death of an insured person, a spouse or a dependent child in order to determine if a benefit payable. A benefit from pension plan could also be payable when an employee, a retiree or a spouse dies.

Benefits may also be paid following an accidental mutilation – that is, loss of a limb or certain faculties due to an accident. This coverage is offered to the worker only, not to dependents.

Specific conditions, limitations, and exclusions other than those mentioned above may apply; only the Règlement sur les régimes complémentaires d'avantages sociaux dans l'industrie de la construction has legal value. The clauses that apply are those in force at the time of the event.

A worker who feels that he or she has the right to benefit different from that granted by the Commission de la construction du Québec, may contest this decision. To do this, he or she must contact Customer Services, which will send him or her the appropriate form.

Workers and retirees considered insured for life insurance

The insurance plans A, B, C, and D (basicsupplementary plans) and the Retirees Insurance Plan offer life insurance coverage. Life insurance coverage payable at death depends on the insurance plan under which the participant was covered at time of death. A person who was no longer participating in the insurance plan at time of death will not be covered by life insurance.

However, workers who cannot be insured under plans A, B, C, or D, or under the Retirees Insurance Plan benefit from life insurance coverage in the following two situations:

  • If they were insured under plan A, B, or C in the preceding period, they obtain the life insurance coverage of plan C;
  • If they were insured under plan D in the preceding period, they obtain the life insurance coverage of plan D.

Example: A worker insured by plan B from January to June automatically receives life insurance coverage under plan C for the following insurance period (July to December) if he or she cannot be insured under plan A, B, C, or D or under the insurance plan for retirees.

People covered by life insurance

Life insurance benefits are payable upon the death:

The posthumous child of an insured is also covered.

Benefit amounts

The life insurance benefits vary depending on the plan.

Because the date of death is not known and the life insurance benefit payable is determined according to coverage at time of death only, it is not possible to know today the amount of life insurance that may be paid for a participant. However, you can consult your Bulletin MÉDIC Construction to find out the life insurance benefit payable according to your current coverage in the case of sudden death.

An additional amount may be paid in the case of accidental death of a worker – that is, when the death results directly from an accident and occurs within 365 days of that accident. This additional amount is not paid in certain cases (for example, if the death results from a suicide, the commission of a criminal act, or participation in a riot).

The Bulletin MÉDIC Construction for each plan lists the benefit amounts.

Specific conditions, limitations, and exclusions other than those mentioned above may apply; only the Règlement sur les régimes complémentaires d'avantages sociaux dans l'industrie de la construction has legal value. The clauses that apply are those in force at the time of the event.

Funeral Funds

It is important not to confuse life insurance and funeral funds. The MÉDIC Construction plan does not offer funeral funds. If an insured thinks that he or she has contributed to a funeral fund, it is likely that this was done through his or her union association. We suggest that these individuals contact their union association for more information.

Workers and retirees considered insured for accidental mutilation

The insurance plans A, B, C, and D (basic or supplementary) offer accidental mutilation coverage.

In addition, workers who cannot be insured under plan A, B, C, or D or under the insurance plan for retirees receive accidental mutilation insurance in the following two situations:

  • If, in the preceding period, they were insured under plan A, B, or C, they obtain the accidental mutilation insurance coverage of plan C;
  • If, in the preceding period, they were insured under plan D, they obtain the accidental mutilation insurance protection of plan D.

Example: A worker insured under plan B from January to June automatically receives accidental mutilation insurance coverage under plan C for the following insurance period (July to December) if he or she is not insured under plan A, B, C, or D or by the insurance plan for retirees.

Persons covered by accidental mutilation insurance

Coverage for accidental mutilation is offered to insureds only (as described above). Their dependents are not covered.

Losses covered and amount of benefits

The following losses suffered by an insured following an accident are covered if they occur within 365 days of the accident. The loss must be complete and definitive.

A benefit equal to the supplement to the amount payable in case of accidental death is payable in the case of loss of:

  • Both hands;

OR

  • Both feet;

OR

The Bulletin MÉDIC Construction for each plan lists the benefit amounts.

Specific conditions, limitations, and exclusions other than those mentioned above may apply; only the Règlement sur les régimes complémentaires d'avantages sociaux dans l'industrie de la construction has legal value. The clauses that apply are those in force at the time of the event.
