Carpenter-Joiner Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It consists of 61 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials supplied for your use during the examination are: a calculator, a pencil, a paper sheet and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Section 1 - Building framing construction (40 %)

  • Reading framing plans
  • Calculating dimensions and quantities according to plan data
  • Erecting a beam and bearing wall
  • Installing joists according to the installation diagram
  • Establishing a reference line — Installing a subfloor
  • Determining, according to the plan, the location of wood or metal walls and partitions
  • Joining, erecting and shoring wood or metal walls and partitions
  • Determining, according to the installation diagram, the location of roof trusses
  • Installing and bracing roof trusses
  • Installing roof underlayment
  • Installing parapets and skylights
  • Installing doors, door frames, garage doors and windows
  • Calculating staircase and balustrade measurements
  • Planning the size of stringers for finished staircases
  • Building staircases

Section 2 - Interior finishing of a building (20 %)

  • Reading interior finishing plans and specifications
  • Using various materials (mineral wool, polyethylene foam, polystyrene, etc.) to install thermal and sound insulation in walls and ceilings
  • Covering walls and ceilings with gypsum boards Installing interior doors and finishing trims
  • Installing integrated furnishings
  • Installing suspended ceilings
  • Installing and finishing wood flooring: hardwood, engineered wood, floating floors
  • Installing transition and reversing tongue mouldings
  • Troubleshooting and making flooring repairs

Section 3 - Exterior finishing of a building (15 %)

  • Installing exterior wall siding, trim, fascia and soffits
  • Installing a roof drip and an eaves protection membrane
  • Installing flashing Installing a roof covering
  • Installing ventilators on the roof
  • Calculating ventilation surfaces

Section 4 - Formwork construction and deep foundations installation (25 %)

  • Formwork: Reading formwork plans
  • Evaluating soil conditions
  • Establishing reference lines and levels
  • Making formwork calculations: calculating volumes, dimensions and elevations
  • Erecting scaffolding
  • Verifying the squaring
  • Erecting footing, wall, column, beam, slab and concrete staircase formwork
  • Assembling panels and tie rods
  • Shoring formwork
  • Installing sealing joints and keys
  • Deep foundations: Installing piles
