Crane Operator Examination - Effective as of January 6, 2025

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 64 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator, a ruler and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Skill content on which questions may be based

Section 1 - INSPECTING, MAINTAINING AND TRANSPORTING A MOBILE CRANE (15%)

  • Pre-departure inspection (SAAQ-VAD)
  • Reviewing logbook items
  • Checking and lubricating required components
  • Planning the route and moving the crane on the road
  • Moving the crane on site, taking various obstacles and constraints into account

Section 2 - PLANNING THE WORK, ASSEMBLING AND DISMANTLING A MOBILE CRANE (60%)

  • Determining the crane location
  • Reviewing the lifting details
  • Levelling the crane
  • Interpreting lifting charts for different situations
  • Checking crane controls
  • Configuring the crane, determining and installing various crane parts (counterweight, jib, etc.).
  • Configuring the crane computer
  • Following the manufacturer's procedure and referring to the manual

Section 3 - OPERATING A MOBILE CRANE TO MOVE LOADS (25%)

  • Selecting and installing the rigging
  • Selecting the correct accessories
  • Inspecting lifting accessories
  • Installing accessories properly
  • Delineating the work area
  • Defining a safe zone
  • Operating the crane
  • Checking the various crane components (closed hoist alarm, stop, etc.)
  • Defining the communication system
  • Learning hand signals
  • Lifting
  • Operating a concrete pump
