Deep Foundation Installer Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 51 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator, a ruler and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Section 1 – Work organization (42%)

  • Preparing the work:
    • Interpreting workshop plan data
    • Determining locations
    • Selecting materials and equipment
    • Verifying excavation and utility location reports
    • Installing location markers
    • Inspecting and maintaining equipment
    • Handling parts and equipment
    • Preventing health and safety hazards on a construction site
  • Communicating in a work situation:
    • Manually signalling manoeuvres to the crane operator
    • Giving the welder instructions
  • Installing pile driving devices on the crane:
    • Connecting the lead
    • Installing safety cables and accessories on the crane
    • Selecting the driving cap
    • Installing the driving cap and the hammer
    • Installing the lead foot
    • Installing the vibratory driver

Section 2 - Pile driving techniques  (30%)

  • Putting in place soldier piles and braces for deep excavations:
    • Determination soldier pile driving locations
    • Checking the soldier piles vertically, movement, depth and driving refusal
    • Welding and oxygen cutting
    • Bracing the soldier pile structure
  • Putting in place various types of piles:
    • Method of driving H-beams, tube piles, bored piles, pedestal piles, pre-stressed concrete piles, screw piles
    • Checking the various piles verticality, movement, depth and driving refusal

Section 3 – Soil structures (28%)

  • Building sheet pile retaining wall:
    • Making and assembling a pile driving template
    • Installing the pile driving template
    • Threading sheet piles
    • Driving sheet piles
    • Checking that a sheet pile structure is watertight
    • Stabilizing sheet piles
    • Sheet pile extraction method
  • Putting a diaphragm wall in place:
    • Training wall formwork
    • Checking training wall concrete work
    • Checking the clamshell and the retention system
    • Guiding the clamshell’s insertion
    • Checking the insertion’s verticality
    • Inserting bentonite in the excavation
    • Preparing the socket
    • Checking the excavation cleanup
    • Installing the tube joint or flat joint
    • Inserting the reinforcement cage
    • Installing hoppers for concrete work
    • Joint tube extraction method
