Tile Setter Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 60 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Section 1 - Preparing surfaces for tiling (33 %)

  • Preparing the work to be done :  
    • Recognizing hazards on the site
    • Selecting personal protective equipment appropriate to the task and the work situation
    • Checking the conformity of the materials received and preparing the material
    • Calculating the amount of materials needed
    • Checking the conformity of the surfaces to be covered
    • Preparing the surfaces based on the product to be installed
  • Correcting the base surface : 
    • Choosing and installing different types of membranes
    • Knowing the conditions for using self-levelling underlayments
    • Preparing and applying self-levelling underlayments
    • Knowing the conditions for using a mortar bed
    • Preparing and installing mortar beds
    • Explaining the methods and work steps

Section 2 - Installing tiles using the thinset method (45 %)

  • Establishing leader lines : 
    • Checking and adjusting the squareness of the installation area
    • Drawing leader lines
  • Applying installation products : 
    • Knowing the properties of and the conditions for using the installation products, mortars and additives
    • Preparing and applying the installation products
  • Laying the tiles : 
    • Choosing and installing profiles
    • Choosing and using cutting tools
    • Knowing the characteristics of the joints
    • Using the tamping and back buttering techniques
    • Explaining the methods and work steps
  • Grouting the tiles : 
    • Knowing the properties of and conditions for using the different types of grout
    • Preparing and applying grout
    • Cleaning the grout

Section 3 - Installing other types of wall coverings and flooring (22%)

  • Installing slabs on floors, stairs and walls
    • Preparing the work to be done : 
      • Determining the sequence of work
      • Preparing flagstones to receive anchors
      • Identifying the location of the anchor points
      • Cutting and drilling the flagstones
    • Installing the flagstones : 
      • Selecting and using the appropriate products for the installation conditions
      • Gluing the flagstones to the substrate
      • Placing and fastening the anchors on the flagstones or substrate (mechanical anchors, wire)
    • Grouting the flagstones  : 
      • Choosing and using grouting products
      • Grouting the flagstones
  • Applying terrazzo flooring
    • Preparing the work to be done : 
      • Selecting and using the appropriate tools and equipment
      • Mixing the terrazzo ingredients
      • Installing divider strips for the terrazzo
    • Applying terrazzo flooring : 
      • Installing and finishing terrazzo flooring
      • Arranging the work steps in order
      • Explaining the methods and work steps
