Electrician Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 60 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator and an eraser. Furthermore, two reference documents will be supplied to you. They are Québec Construction Code, Chapter V – Electricity, 2018, published by Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and Low-Voltage Electrical Service Standard, 10th ed. (June 2014), published by Hydro-Québec. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Skill Content on Which Questions May Be Based

Section 1 - Planning electrical work (22%)

  • Maintaining a safe working environment. Following the procedures for locking up equipment.
  • Preparing the materials needed for the work.
  • Using electrical measurement instruments and interpreting the measurements.
  • Calculating current, voltage, power and resistance.
  • Choose overcurrent protection devices and the required conductors.

Section 2 - Installing electrical equipment (24%)

  • Installing conductors and cables; wiring systems, tubes, and connectors; boxes and enclosures; cable trays; panels.
  • Determining the diameter of conductors.
  • Calculating conduit and tubing fill.
  • Recognizing compliant installations.

Section 3 – Connecting equipment and systems (25%)

  • Installing ground connections and verifying the bonding.
  • Installing low-voltage distribution systems.
  • Installing service entrances.
  • Installing metring equipment.
  • Installing generators.
  • Installing fire-alarm, intrusion-alarm, access-control, and video-camera systems.

Section 4 – Creating branch circuit systems (29%)

  • Locating and installing connection outputs.
  • Installing lighting systems.
  • Installing electrical connections for heating, air-conditioning, and ventilation systems.
  • Installing control systems and power devices.
  • Recognizing and interpreting symbols and rating plates.
  • Understanding control diagrams and control systems.
  • Distinguishing various types of automated control system signals, control loops, and components.
  • Installing and connecting different types of transformers.
  • Calculating transformer input and output values.
