Elevator Mechanic Examination
The examination is 3 hours long. It consists of 61 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials supplied for your use during the examination are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator, a ruler and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.
Skill Content on Which Questions May Be Based
Section 1 – Assembling and installing passenger and freight elevators (45%)
Planning the work:
- Interpreting plans and specifications
- Planning safety measures
- Selecting the equipment and the correct rigging tool
Installing the passenger or freight elevator
- Erecting the scaffolding, false car, etc.
- Verifying shaft measurements
- Assembling and installing the first components inside the shaft
- Assembling and installing the equipment (motor, controllers, and pumps unit)
- Installing and aligning the cylinder(s)
- Installing suspension cables, governor cables, and compensating cables
- Installing speed regulators
- Putting the platform into temporary operation
- Installing door frames
- Installing wiring, ducts, and accessories in the shaft
- Installing the cabin on the platform and the accessories
- Making the final electrical connections
Making adjustments
- Making the final adjustments and verification
- Participating in technical tests
Section 2 – Assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing escalators and moving sidewalks (15%)
Planning:
- Interpreting plans and specifications
- Planning safety measures
- Selecting the equipment and rigging tools
Installing an escalator or moving sidewalk:
- Verifying bed measurements
- Fixing the equipment permanently
- Placing the components and building the escalator, if applicable
- Making the electrical connection
Making adjustments and final verifications:
- Make the final adjustments
- Participate in technical tests
Maintaining an escalator or moving sidewalk:
- Verifying the operation of the escalator or moving sidewalk
- Verifying the moving parts
- Lubricating and cleaning
Repairing an escalator or moving sidewalk:
- Replacing worn or broken components
Section 3 – Maintaining, repairing, and modernizing passenger and freight elevators (40%)
Planning:
- Interpreting plans and specifications
- Planning safety measures
- Selecting the rigging tools
Maintaining a passenger or freight elevator:
- Applying a verification procedure for the cabin
- Applying a verification procedure in the machine room
- Applying a verification procedure in the shaft
- Testing the help call system
- Testing the telecommunications system
- Maintaining lifting devices for people with reduced mobility
- Maintaining freight elevators and materials hoists
Repairing a passenger or freight elevator:
- Diagnosing, dismantling, repairing, and reassembling the components
- Performing tests and making final verifications
Modernizing a passenger or freight elevator:
- Dismantling, changing parts to comply with new norms, and reassembling
