Roller Operator Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 60 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator, a ruler and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Skill content on which questions may be based

Section 1 – Prepare roller and plan job (25%)

  • Select the right roller (pneumatic, 2 cylinder, combined, etc.) for the job
  • Use tools and products required for roller’s operation
  • Check mechanical, electrical and electronic components
  • Adjust tire pressure on a pneumatic roller
  • Apply collective and individual safety measures
  • Maintain and clean roller

Section 2 – Compact Aggregates (35%)

  • Interpret specifications and data on survey markers
  • Conduct start-up procedure
  • Compact aggregates on new or existing surfaces
  • Start vibration
  • Set engine speed
  • Set rolling speed
  • Perform back and forth passes
  • Check compacting quality
  • Park aggregate roller

Section 3 – Compacting butiminous surfacings (40%)

  • Interpret specifications
  • Recognize any difficulties associated with soil characteristics
  • Recognize road structures
  • Position roller
  • Apply post-start-up procedures
  • Set vibration level
  • Set engine speed
  • Set rolling speed
  • Perform back and forth passes
  • Check compacting quality
  • Park roller
  • Shut down engine
